Checking and repairing the client register
If your computer crashed, frooze, or if power was lost, while the
Bailine program was running you may have lost some clients and their
data.
Next time you restart the Bailine program the program will prompt
you to verify and repair the client register. Select 'Repair now'
to repair the register.
On most computers repairing the register should only take a few seconds.
If it takes longer and you are are running under DOS you should install
smartdrive to speed up the hard disk.
If you select 'Repair later' you can postphone the repairs but
then you may not get access to all clients in the client register
and may possible lose clients so REPAIR as soon as you can.
To repair the register later; restart the program and it will again
ask you if you want to repair now or later. (Or to avoid restarting
you can use the 'manual repair' function as explained below.)
When you get the 'Repair now' message you should also check the
hard disk as explained below.
Checking for lost clients
You check for lost clients through the menu 'Register' + 'Todays
clients'. Verify that all Today's clients are listed. If one of
more clients are missing you need to restore those clients from
a backup.
Clients with damaged data are marked in the register with three
astrixes ('***'). Such clients can not be opened. Use the 'manual
repair' function as explained below to try to repair the data. Clients
with data that could not be repaired will be deleted, and will have
to be restored from a backup.
Restoring clients
In order to restore clients you need to have a backup taken BEFORE
you lost the clients.
If you have taken an internal backup you can easily restore
clients yourself. If not you will have to email HQ your latest USB
backup and get it coverted to a restorable backup format.
Repairing the hard disk
It does not help to repair the client register if the hard disk
contains errors as well.
Every time a computer is improperly shut down small errors may
occur within the file system.
Over time many such minor problems will make the system unstable.
Windows:
Windows will usually try to repair the system automatically after
a system crash.
To manually verify and repair the hard disk under Windows you right
click on the hard disk icon, select the menu 'Properties' + 'Tools'
+ 'Check now' or 'Scan disk'.
After checking the hard disk you should also defrag (tidy up) the
hard disk by selecting:
Properties + Tools + 'Defrag now' or 'Defrag'.
DOS:
In DOS you type the following on the C-prompt:
SCANDISK C: [Enter]
and follow the prompts. If scandisk informs you there is lost data
there is no need to save these as you can not use those data anyway.
You can also skip doing a deep scan.
- Select delete if the scandisk ask if you want to save lost data
- Select skip if scandisk ask if you want to create a restore
disk
- Select No if scandisk ask if you want to perform a 'deep scan'
(a deep scan can take a long time, you can still run it if you
want a very thurough check of the surface of your hard disk)
It is recommended to BACKUP to an external media like an USB stick
before you use SCANDISK.
If the SCANDISK command does not work your system is missing required
files or they are not correctly installed. In that case we recommend
upgrading to at least MS-DOS
7.1.
You can check what DOS you have installed by typing the following
on the DOS prompt:
VER [Enter]
Manual repair of the Bailine register
The menu 'Register: Special functions: Verify and repair' contains
functions to manually repair the client register. Normally you would
not need to use these functions.
Verify the Bailine register
This function searches through all the saved clients in the client
register and ensures that all the clients are properly stored.
Repair the Bailine register
This function controls the client register for errors and then
rebuilds the necessary data indexes as required.
Re-index clients
Re-index today's
The functions 'Re-index clients' and 'Re-index today's' works in
the same way as the 'Re-index the register', but it rebuilds the
indexes for both the client names and the day overview respectively.
