Installing BSP under DOS and/or Windows
Enabling the simulator ports
Note 1: You do not need to have the simulators hooked
up to the
computer in order to enable or test the simulator ports.
First start the Bailine BSP program. Hit Escape on
any error messages
until you can select the menu:
Bailine + Program Setup + Simulator Setup
You get a list of the detected possible simulator ports in the
computer.
If there are no serial ports listed the computer lacks serial ports
or
the serial ports are not properly installed.
To enable simulator port number 1 (if present) you hit the digit
'1'
then '1' to select 'Enable simulator'.
To enable simulator port number 2 (if present) you hit the digit
'2'
then '1' to select 'Enable simulator'.
Enable all the available simulator ports (wether or not you have
connected simulators to the ports.)
Note 2: If you get an error message 'Can not enable port' on a
port
located on a PCI card make sure the card is properly seated in the
PCI slot. You can also try moving the card to another PCI slot.
Note 3: Port#1 on the older multi port ISA card does not work on
all computers.
Note 4: If you can't access any ports and you are running under
Windows make sure to update Windows through Windows Update.
For outdated Windows installations follow the instructions found
here.
Note 5: Another program installed on the computer can block serial
ports, eg. a serial mouse). This will also happen if you eg. have
installed
the DOS drivers from the Bailine multi port card CD. (These drivers
should not be used)
Testing the simulator ports
Start by exiting then restarting the BSP program. (The first time
you enable a new port the program needs to be restarted before
the port will usable.)
After restarting hit Escape on any error messages until you can
select the menu: Bailine + Program Setup + Simulator Setup
Test the enabled simulator ports by hitting 'T' as in 'Test'. (It
does
not matter if you have connected simulators or not while doing this)
If any of the ports returns other than OK (or 0 errors) you have
to
exit the BSP program, restart the program, and possible reboot
the computer, then redo the test.
When the test has failed you will still be able to exit the BSP
program
but the computer will continue to react a bit slowly until you have
restarted the program.
Note: It is to be expected that the test will fail the FIRST time
you
access a new port installed on a new PCI card.)
When the above test is returning OK it is time to connect the simulators.
You connect the Bailine simulator to a serial port by using the
supplied
cable. The layout of these cables (and for a serial port adapter)
are
found here.
Note that most built in serial ports are 9-pins so you need a 9
to 25
serial port adapter to use the supplied simulator cable unless you
use the Bailine multi port card. (You can not use this card under
XP)
Keep the test running while connecting the simulators. That way
you
will see if a connected simulator is responding, either by beep'ing
or
by flashing lights depending on whether the simulators pads are
put
together two-and-two, black side against black side. (For more
information on simulator problems and troubleshooting click here.)
